A 12 year old boy has admitted attacking and raping a five year old girl in his bedroom. The 12 year old confessed to the crime a day before his hearing is scheduled to start in court.
The victim’s mother said in court: “When we first found out about what happened to our daughter we were both devastated and it felt like someone had torn our hearts out, I feel like I have let my daughter down. Since the day of the rape their daughter had contemplated taking her own life since the rape.”
Defence lawyer, Natalie Dennington, explained to the 12 year old that if the case went to trial it would be in the newspapers and he could be forced to move home if people found out what he had done.
She said that the boy felt confessing to the crime would have a devastating effect on his family, but he went ahead to confess and accept responsibility for his actions.
The Defence lawyer also said the boy should be given credit for someone so young accepting full responsibility for something wrong he had done.
The Judge gave the boy a 12 month referral order to work with a Youth Offending Team rather than going to prison.
