Ghanian Woman denied Asylum in Israel for not being lesbian enough!


Mavis Amponsah, a 41-year-old Ghanaian filed a request for asylum as soon as she arrived in the country in December 2013. She said she had been in a relationship with another woman in her village for more than two decades. Her father who acted as the tribe leader, as well as her community, ‘objected to this’, according to Haaretz. Mavis Ampons

Mavis Amponsah claimed she was forced to leave her partner behind in Ghana, and while she said she was waiting for her partner to join her, the committee said she didn't act on her alleged preference. The committee said Mavis Amponsah did not attempt to meet or date any women, and this is contrary to what might be expected of someone fleeing persecution for a sexual preference . Israel is the most friendly place for Gays in the Middle East. In Ghana, homosexuality is punishable by up to three years in prison.


Mavis Amponsah said her partner and her were assaulted twice in Ghana and that she cant return because she fear for her life. The Israeli interior ministry rejected her application on 19 August 2015. The committee claimed she choose to adopt a lesbian lifestyle and not really a lesbian.
