The Syrian Army has finally recaptured the old city of Palmyra. The ancient city has been shattered in ruins after an intensive fierce battle between the Islamist states and the Syrian soldiers.

The Islamic State seized the ancient city in May 2015, the fall of Palmyra would mark the largest single gain for the Syrian army and President Bashar al-Assad since Russia intervened with air power late September, 2015. The Britain based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the citadel had been captured. It said there were about 56 airstrikes between dawn and early afternoon on Friday.
