Egyptian Judoka sent home from Rio for refusing to shake hand with an Israeli opponent

An Egyptian judoka has been sent home after refusing to shake his Israeli opponent's hand.

The IOC said on Monday that Islam El Shehaby received a severe reprimand for his behavior of not shaking hand with his Israeli opponent following his first-round heavyweight bout loss to Or Sasson on Friday.

When Sasson extended his hand, El Shehaby backed away. The referee called the 34-year-old El Shehaby back to the mat and demanded he bow. He gave a quick nod before walking off amid loud boos from the crowd.

The IOC said in a statement that the Egyptian's conduct was contrary to the rules of fair play and against the spirit of friendship embodied in the Olympic values.

Egyptian judoka, El Shehaby was then suspended from the Rio games and sent home back to Eygpt.
