The government also stated that facts had been gathered that most of the land grabbers were being sponsored by highly placed individuals in the society, especially traditional rulers, and if anyone is found wanting, he or she would be made to face the full wrath of the law.
The land grabbers, who are also known as the Omo Onile or the Ajagungbales had been a problem for land owners in Lagos for decades.
The People who had fallen victims to such cancerous activities had welcomed with their hearts the stand of new State Government, ushered by Governor Akinwummi Ambode.
The State Governor also said he would make sure the act to set up Special Task Force on Land Grabbers are set up under his office to send a signal to those who think it is still business as usual.
The law states, anybody who still uses force to take over properties from anyone and still do so after 3 months of the commencement of this law has committed at offense, and that is liable to 10 years imprisonment.
The law states, anybody who still uses force to take over properties from anyone and still do so after 3 months of the commencement of this law has committed at offense, and that is liable to 10 years imprisonment.
Also, anyone without lawful authority who applies threats or violence to secure entry into any landed property for personal use, commits the same offence and that also is liable to 10 years imprisonment.
The act also states, even if the entry are lawful, it doesn't give you right to use threats or violence on anyone.
So therefore, anyone who commits the offence of threats and violence shall also be liable to 10 years imprisonment.
Also, anyone who uses fire arms or offensive weapons of any kind, and in the process of force entry wounds anyone, that is liable to 4 years imprisonment.
That mean any land grabbers can be sent to a maximum period of 14 years imprisonment. This is because, when you take over a property by force, that is 10 years.
This means, you wouldn't have been taken over a property without the use of violence, and some kind of weapon, and that will be 4 years imprisonment. This attracts a total of 14 years altogether.
