Vitamin D importance and deficiency

Vitamin D refers to a group of fat-soluble secosteroids responsible for enhancing intestinal absorption of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphate, and zinc. In humans, the most important compounds in this group are vitamin D3 also known as cholecalciferol and vitamin D2, known as ergocalciferol. Vitamin D3 and vitamin D2 can be ingested from the diet and from supplements. Very few foods contain vitamin D. Dermal synthesis of vitamin D from cholesterol is dependent on sun exposure (specifically UVB radiation). Vitamin D from the diet or dermal synthesis from sunlight is biologically inactive; activation requires enzymatic conversion in the liver and kidney. Evidence indicates the synthesis of vitamin D from sun exposure is regulated by a negative feedback loop that prevents toxicity, but because of uncertainty about the cancer risk from sunlight, no recommendations are issued by the Institute of Medicine for the amount of sun exposure required to meet vitamin D requirements. Open Letter To President Buhari by Fani-Kayode

Open Letter To President Buhari by Fani-Kayode Fani-Kayode “Mr. President, as one of your most loyal and faithful subjects who has nothing but the utmost respect for your person and your office I am constrained to write you this open letter. This is because there are a number of issues that I believe that it is important for you to clarify and to come clean on. I say this because some of your assertions of late are at best contradictory and at worst patently dishonest. Whichever side of the political divide we are on I believe that we can all agree on one thing: that the prosecution of the war against terror is not something that any of us should play politics with. This is especially so given the fact that human lives are at stake and the very existence of our nation is under threat. Like much of the rest of the world, our country is going through hell at the hands of the jihadists and Islamist terrorists. There is no gainsaying that we must all come to terms with th...

U.S. defense spending will'crumble, says Russia

Political scientist Ivan Zadorozhny wrote: "The  United State of American military might is certain to last while the money is there for the borrowing. But when the world stops lending, all bets are off.” “For example, if there is a capital flight from the U.S. in the event of war with Russia, to which country will the capital and assets move?”  “If the dollar collapses, what is the currency in which foreign trade will be conducted? Will the euro not collapse as well? Furthermore, the Russian economy is in recession, and the ruble has plummeted; with the current global oil surplus, wouldn’t pressure on the price of oil be even greater if there is war? And what are Russia’s alternative sources of foreign exchange?” Zadorozhny, in an article headlined “Military Power Doesn’t Directly Correlate to GDP,” said that all the talk about Russia being militarily “outmatched” by the U.S. doesn’t translate into U.S. superiority. “There are problems with GDP or military budget compar...

N.orth Korea has today sentenced an American student to 15 years Imprisonment and hard labour

North Korea has sentenced an American student, 21 who admitted stealing a propaganda banner from a hotel to 15 years and hard labour. Observers said the harsh sentence was likely a reflection of soaring military tensions on the Korean peninsula following the North’s nuclear test. Pyongyang has maintained a daily barrage of nuclear strike threats against both Seoul and Washington, over the ongoing South Korea-US military drills that the North perceives as provocative rehearsals for an invasion. The United States has no diplomatic or consular relations with the North. The Swedish embassy in Pyongyang provides limited consular services to US citizens detained there. The US State Department “strongly recommends against all travel” to North Korea and specifically warns of the risk of arrest. Human Rights Watch said the severe sentence was shocking given that Warmbier’s alleged offence amounted to little more than a “college-style prank”. “Pyongyang should recognize this st...
